Cypher Culture was incepted in 2013 by B-boy/Community leader Dennis “Nasa” Pennalligen at a breaking battle held in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia. Over time, Cypher Culture grew into a community-focused street dance initiative that fosters experiences that create spaces for social, cultural and community dances to be celebrated supporting events such as City Sessions, Nice Fest, Burn Circuit and Pyramid Jam.
As of 2023, Cypher Culture has formed into a not-for-profit cultural organisation aiming to support street dance and its diverse communities in so-called “Australia”.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Cypher Culture acknowledges the Traditional Owners, the Wurundjeri and Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation, on whose land we meet, share and work. We pay our respects to Elders past and present, and extend our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from all nations of this land.
We also acknowledge the origins of our artistic and cultural forms that inform our practice that are rooted within the history of marginalised communities in the United States including Black and Latinx people and in other regions of the world where additional forms were created.
As Street Dance has grown into a global community and exchange, we pay our respects to the originators of these forms and participate as contributing guests.
